Ready to Read Phonics Plus Phase 2 – Tupu l Seedling

Tupu l Seedling is the second phase of the Ready to Read Phonics Plus series. Tupu begins with double consonant spelling patterns and consonant blends (two consonants next to each other which each make their own sound e.g. cr-) in words with short vowel sounds. These follow the CCVC (consonant, consonant, vowel consonant) and CVCC (consonant, vowel, consonant, consonant) spelling patterns.

Long vowel sounds are then introduced which follow the VCe (vowel, consonant silent e) pattern. This is called a split digraph because the spelling of the vowel sound has been split by the consonant.

Tupu l Seedling texts are designed to build on the following foundational skills for ongoing reading success:

    • Decoding (segmenting and blending) common phonetically regular words expanding from the CVC spelling pattern in Kākano | Seed, to the CCVC and CVCC spelling patterns.
    • Comprehension strategies, with children now having opportunities to make connections with characters and storylines from previous books.
    • Developing oral language and vocabulary skills around a story.
