Ready to Read Phonics Plus – Tupu 2
Tupu 2 is the second and final subgroup within the Tupu | Seedling phase of learning in the Ready to Read Phonics Plus series. When students reach the end of Tupu 2, they move onto the Māhuri | Sapling phase of learning.
Tupu | Seedling texts are designed to build on the foundational reading skills taught in the Kākano | Seed phase including:
- Decoding (segmenting and blending) common phonetically regular words, expanding from the CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) spelling pattern in Kākano | Seed, to the CCVC (consonant, consonant, vowel, consonant) and CVCC (consonant, vowel, consonant, consonant) spelling patterns.
- Comprehension strategies, with children now having opportunities to make connections with characters and storylines from previous books.
- Developing oral language and vocabulary skills around a story.
Tupu 2 details
Tupu 2 introduces:
- Long vowel sounds which follow the VCe (vowel, consonant, silent e) pattern. This is called a split digraph because the spelling of the vowel sound has been split by the consonant: a_e e_e i_e o_e u_e
- Alternative sounds (phonemes) for the same spelling (grapheme): soft c, oo (as in food) and oo (oo as in look).
Tupu 2 books continue to add more high frequency words to support more varied and interesting storylines. This includes both high frequency English words, and kupu Māori | Māori words commonly used in New Zealand classrooms.
Tupu 2 books contain the following new high frequency words:
good, can’t, over, gives, past, who, begin, does, their, your, as, day, start, are, away, sea.
Tupu 2 has thirteen decodable student books. Each book adds new sound and letter knowledge so students can learn and practise in a cumulative way. You can use the Tupu phonics cards to make sure students have all the sound and letter knowledge they need before reading a Tupu 2 book.
Ready to Read Phonics Plus books have teaching notes inside the back cover. These provide ideas about how you can use the books to engage your students with word recognition and ways to build language knowledge.
