This page describes the supporting materials in the Tupu| Seedling phase of Ready to Read Phonics Plus. You will find a support video on teaching students to articulate sounds and blend decodable words, and information about the Tupu phonics cards, the Tupu book series and the Tupu bingo games. The resources are available to download under “Materials that come with this resource.”
Tupu | Seedling supporting materials – cards and games
Tupu l Seedling is the second phase of the Ready to Read Phonics Plus series. Texts are designed to build on the following foundational skills introduced in the first phase Kākano | Seed:
- Decoding (segmenting and blending) common phonetically regular words expanding from the CVC spelling pattern in Kākano | Seed, to the CCVC and CVCC spelling patterns.
- Comprehension strategies, with children now having opportunities to make connections with characters and storylines from previous books.
- Developing oral language and vocabulary skills around a story.
There are a number of supporting materials for the Tupu | Seedling phase.

Tupu | Seedling supporting materials
The Tupu | Seedling phonics cards follow on from the Kākano | Seed sound cards. You can use them to support teaching of letter- sound (grapheme-phoneme) correspondences and spelling patterns before students encounter them in the Tupu books, or to support as they read. Students’ learning needs guide you in choosing how to use the cards.

The Tupu | Seedling phase overview shows the suggested order of the books, the focus sounds, words to blend, and kupu Māori for each book.

Tupu l Seedling texts are designed to build on the following foundational skills for ongoing reading success:

Ready to Read Phonics Plus books have teaching notes in the inside cover. These provide ideas about how you can use the books to engage your students with word recognition and ways to build language knowledge.

Ready to Read Phonics Plus includes a games pack designed to provide opportunities for students to practice the skills you have already explicitly taught – skills such as decoding and blending. The games provide opportunities to consolidate the sound-letter relationships learned in the Tupu | Seedling phase of the Ready to Read Phonics Plus Scope and Sequence.

Tupu I Seedling is the second phase of learning in the Ready to Read Phonics Plus series.

Tupu 1 is the first of the two subgroups within the Tupu | Seedling phase of learning in the Ready to Read Phonics Plus series. Tupu 1 focuses on -ff -ll -ss -zz x -tch qu wh -dge and initial and end blends.
2 of 3Ready to Read Phonics Plus - Tupu 2
Tupu 2 is the second and final subgroup within the Tupu | Seedling phase of learning in the Ready to Read Phonics Plus series. Tupu 2 focuses on -long vowels a_e, e_e, i_e, o_e, u_e, along with the soft c, oo (as in food) and oo (as in look).
