Ready to Read Phonics Plus – Kākano l Seed Phase
Kākano I Seed is the first phase of the Ready to Read Phonics Plus series. The focus is on words with short vowel sounds.
Kākano | Seed texts are designed to support students to build the following foundational skills for ongoing reading success:
- Decode (segment and blend) common phonetically regular words which follow the consonant vowel consonant (CVC) spelling pattern.
- Comprehend simple stories.
- Develop oral language and vocabulary skills around a story.

The phase overview details the subgroups within Kākano | Seed, providing the suggested order, focus sounds, words to blend, and kupu Māori for each book.

Kākano 1 introduces nine single letter-sound (grapheme-phoneme) correspondences used to make CVC words:

The books contain limited text and very few high frequency words:
and, is, I, the, a
Kākano 2 continues to focus on the skill of decoding (segmenting and blending) CVC words. Nine new single letter-sound (grapheme-phoneme) correspondences are introduced:

The books contain the following new high frequency words:
sees, off, says, of, no, her, go, to, me, out, has, look, they
Kākano 3 introduces the single letter-sound (grapheme-phoneme) correspondences not yet covered in Kākano 1 or Kākano 2:
k j v w y z
Digraphs (two letter spellings for single sounds) are then introduced. Five consonant digraphs are covered:
-ck th ch sh -ng
Kākano 3 books start to include more high frequency words to support more varied and interesting storylines. This includes both high frequency English words, and kupu Māori | Māori words commonly used in New Zealand classrooms.
The books contain the following new high frequency words:
his, he, will, for, we, you, likes, by, have, be, said, too, my, she
There are additional resources available to support teaching in the Kākano |Seed phase:
- Sound cards for introducing the letter-sound (grapheme-phoneme) correspondences
- Games students can use to practise letter-sound correspondences, including matching pairs, snap and bingo
