Ready to Read Phonics Plus – Kākano 3
Kākano 3 is the third and final subgroup in the Kākano | Seed phase of learning in Ready to Read Phonics Plus. When students reach the end of Kākano 3, they move onto the Tupu | Seedling phase of learning.
Kākano | Seed texts are designed to support students to build the following foundational skills for ongoing reading success:
- Decode (segment and blend) common phonetically regular words that follow the consonant vowel consonant (CVC) spelling pattern.
- Comprehend simple stories.
- Develop oral language and vocabulary skills around a story.
Kākano 3 details
Kākano 3 introduces the single letter-sound (grapheme-phoneme) correspondences not yet covered in Kākano 1 or Kākano 2:
k j v w y z
Digraphs (two letter spellings for single sounds) are then introduced. Five consonant digraphs are covered in Kākano 3:
-ck th ch sh -ng
Kākano 3 books start to include more high frequency words to support more varied and interesting storylines. This includes both high frequency English words, and kupu Māori | Māori words commonly used in New Zealand classrooms.
Kākano 3 books contain the following new high frequency words:
his, he, will, for, we, you, likes, by, have, be, said, too, my, she
Kākano 3 has ten decodable student books. Each book adds new sound and letter knowledge so children can learn and practise in a cumulative way. You can use the Kākano sound cards to make sure students have all the sound and letter knowledge they need before reading a Kākano 3 text.
Ready to Read Phonics Plus books have teaching notes inside the back cover. These provide ideas about how you can use the books to engage your students with word recognition and ways to build language knowledge.
