Ready to Read Phonics Plus – Kākano 1

Kākano 1 is the first of the three subgroups in the Kākano | Seed phase of learning in the Ready to Read Phonics Plus series. When students reach the end of Kākano 1, they move into Kākano 2.

Kākano | Seed texts are designed to support students to build the following foundational skills for ongoing reading success:

  • Decode (segment and blend) common phonetically regular words that follow the consonant vowel consonant (CVC) spelling pattern.
  • Comprehend simple stories.
  • Develop oral language and vocabulary skills around a story.

Kākano 1 details

 |

Kākano 1 introduces nine letter-sound (grapheme-phoneme) correspondences that are used to make CVC words:

m a d p o t n i s

Kākano 1 books contain limited text and very few high frequency words:

and, is, I, the, a

Kākano 1 has six decodable student books. Each book adds new sound and letter knowledge so children can learn and practise in a cumulative way. You can use the Kākano sound cards to make sure students have all the sound and letter knowledge they need before reading a Kākano 1 text.

Ready to Read Phonics Plus books have teaching notes inside the back cover. These provide ideas about how you can use the books to engage your students with word recognition and ways to build language knowledge.

You can access the Kākano 1 books via the carousel at the bottom of this page. The suggested teaching order of the Kākano 1 books, along with their focus sounds, is as follows:

  1. Nat and Pip - m a d p o t n i s
  2. Pop and Mop - m a d p o t n i s
  3. I am in - m a d p o t n i s
  4. To the Top - m a d p o t n i s
  5. Pip and Tom - m a d p o t n i s
  6. Dot to Dot - m a d p o t n i s
