Cooperative sport

Learn about cooperation and competition in sport through net/wall games such as modified volleyball.

Net/wall games are games in which players send an object (example ball, shuttle) over a net or against a wall so that it lands in an area that an opponent is defending. The aim is to make it difficult for the opponent to return the object or force them into a mistake.

Context

Learning about cooperation and competition in sport through net/wall games eg. modified volleyball.

Children learn these skills when playing meaningful games in context. Learning should always be situated in real games, which enable children to develop their ability to adapt to real situations. Research shows that skills taught in isolation do not necessarily transfer.  

Unit aim

To develop constructive attitudes, values, and behaviours to manage cooperative and competitive sporting environments.

General overview

Teachers should provide a range of game experiences that:

  • Develop game skills such as the ability to read the situation, to support fellow players, to work as a team, and to create and adapt solutions.
  • Develop movement skills that enhance game-playing ability, such as flight reception, court positioning, ball or shuttle placement, building an attack.
  • Provide a variety of practice that requires children to skilfully adapt to different contexts.  

In the volleyball specific context:

  • Ākonga complete 2–3 sessions of teacher directed learning in skills for modified volleyball (that is, overhead pass, forearm pass, and serve).
  • Ākonga work in teams to develop their skills and teamwork strategies for modified volleyball.
  • Ākonga play the games in teams with a focus on inclusion.
  • Ākonga participate in their teams in a tournament of modified volleyball. They are responsible for officiating and scoring teams on a range of cooperative abilities.

Ākonga will experience and demonstrate ways in which cultural and social practices of sport are expressed through modified sport. 

Ākonga will consider cultural and social practices associated with net/wall games such as volleyball. In teams ākonga will develop and demonstrate team chant, uniform, team name, and accept responsibility. 

Ākonga work in teams to develop skills of modified volleyball. 

Ākonga complete peer assessed score sheet indicating team involvement, team chant, and team uniform. 

3B4 

Ākonga will develop social and cooperative skills and responsible attitudes about emotional safety in modified volleyball competition. 

Ākonga play games of modified games eg. volleyball recording levels of encouragement, inclusiveness, and positive sporting behaviour onto peer assessed score sheet. 

Ākonga complete peer assessed score sheet indicating levels of encouragement, inclusiveness, and positive sporting behaviour.
