Teacher-only days

Four Teacher-only days were provided for 2023-2024 to support schools and kura to get ready for curriculum and assessment changes.

To help minimise disruption for parents and whanau, and to support collaboration, schools and kura have been encouraged to coordinate the delivery of these days locally.

For most schools and kura, the fourth of these days will be held between 21 October and 15 November 2024.

• Schools and kura choosing to use a Teacher-only day to attend structured literacy and Rangaranga Reo ā-Ta PLD, may hold their day outside this period.

Focus of the Teacher-only days

For the upcoming TOD we’ve worked with a Sector Advisory group to identify what are the likely priorities for Term 4, 2024 to help guide the resources we will be making available in October.

These priorities include:

• Implementation of English and Te Reo Rangatira for Years 0-8
• Implementation of maths and pāngarau for Years 0-6
• Using the NCEA co-requsities

Note: Schools and kura can set their own focus for these TODs as they prepare for the changes to curriculum and assessment.

Delivering your Teacher-only day

For the fourth TOD schools and kura are again encouraged to coordinate the delivery of their days locally.

Support to deliver your Teacher-only day

Resources to support you to deliver your Teacher-only days are available below, and we will be continuing to add to this list as new resources become available.

The resources we’re providing include:

• Resources that were provided for the May 2024 TOD 
• New planning resources
• Links to resources hosted on other sites (such as ncea.ed)

Keep an eye out for updates on Tāhūrangi and in the school leader’s Bulletin for when new resources become available.

New Zealand Curriculum

Resources for you to use during the 21 October to 15 November 2024 teacher-only day are available below.

They include:

• A wall planner that shows whats happening between now and Term 2 2025. 
• A checklist to help schools prepare for the curriculum and assessment changes.
• A brochure that helps schools identify where they are in the change process and where to go for support
• A comprehensive set of instructions and guidance for schools in selecting the best resources for them is being made available on a specifically-design section of Tāhūrangi, called Structured Approaches to Maths, from October 15. 

The following resources published for the third teacher-only day in May remain available below:

• A video that provides a walkthrough of Tāhūrangi and how to access resources
• An activity to help schools dive deeper into Tāhūrangi
• A video that explains in detail the Science of Learning

Note that the release of the finalised curriculum content for maths for Years 0-8 and English for Years 0-6 will be published this term. For schools that deliver their teacher-only day before these resources are released the consultation drafts remain available here.

When these materials are released they will be accompanied by the following:

• A series of modules to help teachers familiarise themselves with the new curriculum. 
• Resource guides

Te Marautanga o Aotearoa

Please visit Te Paerangi Kaiako 4 for information, resources, and activities to support kaiako with:

• Te Reo Rangatira (Tau 0-6) and Pāngarau (Tau 0-8) wāhanga ako copies, posters, and prompt questions
• Information about Rangaranga Reo ā Tā and where you can access PLD.
• Understanding more about Hihira Weteoro, (phonics check) including a short video of a kaiako and ākonga doing the 20 week auditory check and activities.
• Navigating key Pāngarau resources in a video to support kaiako to access and order hard copy resources to support Rangaranga Pāngarau.
• Resources that have been prepared to support kaiako in their approach to aromatawai in everyday teaching through a shared understanding of aromatawai as described in Te Puāwaitanga Harakeke.
• A wall planner and checklist that may help with your planning for 2025.

NCEA resources

New resources and one page teacher support guides are now available on NCEA.Govt.

These resources have been designed for school leaders, teachers, whānau and students.

• New resource guides to organise our collection of literacy and numeracy resources for easy use by school leaders, teachers, whānau and students.
• New one-page co-requisite teacher resources to support teachers with best practice, next steps and teaching strategies if a co-requisite learning outcome is not achieved.

Resources to help you plan for the upcoming curriculum changes

To help you get ready for upcoming curriculum changes, the resources below focus on preparing for Term 1, 2025 when schools and kura will be starting to use the updated English and Te Reo Rangatira curriculum materials for Years 0-6, and the maths and pāngarau curriculum materials for Years 0 – 8.

Activity 1: Getting to know Tāhūrangi 

One of the activities for this year’s Teacher-Only Day is a walkthrough of Tāhūrangi, the Ministry’s new online curriculum hub. Tāhūrangi is the new site for information, resources, news, advice, and guidance, inspiring school stories, practical ideas, research reports, how to get support, and much, much more. It is key that teachers understand how to use Tāhūrangi so that they can access the latest curriculum content and resources they need to support the government’s priorities.​

Accessing Resources on New Zealand Curriculum

Watch this video to get an overview of the New Zealand Curriculum resources available on Tāhūrangi. The video will guide you through Tāhūrangi, and will cover:

• how to move around the platform and from one curriculum to another
• how to search for resources and download them to your device
• how to add resources to your kete, or shopping trolley, so you can download or share them via email.

This video will be helpful to all school leaders and year 0-13 teachers.

Using an Education Sector Logon

Watch this video to see the additional features  available to users with an Education Sector Logon (ESL), including:

• how to create and share collections of resources with other users who have an ESL
• setting up your own account with personalised preferences, saved content/resource collections, and how to see your download history.

This video will be helpful to all school leaders and year 0-13 teachers.

Activity 2: Exploring Tāhūrangi Further

After viewing the videos, consider this activity:

• Individually, write down any questions or feedback. Consider what feels familiar or similar to other online platforms, and what feels different.
• Share your thoughts back with the wider group.

Activity 3: The Science of Learning Explained​

Watch this video, featuring Dr Nina Hood and Associate Professor Alison Arrow, for a reminder about the science of learning, the evidence behind it, and how you can weave this information into your teaching methods. 

Dr Nina Hood, Founder of the Education Hub, will give you a quick introduction to the science of learning, what the research on the science tells us about the cognitive processes that inform the learning process, and the implications of this on pedagogy and curriculum. 

Associate Professor Alison Arrow, University of Canterbury, then explains how the science of learning can be applied within a structured literacy approach.
