Teaching Strategies

Information to support effective teaching practices, strategies, and pedagogies using tautōhito urutai - responsive practice.

Having a repertoire of teaching practices, strategies, and pedagogies that are supported by evidence and grounded in the science of learning enables kaiako to select the approaches that best support the learning of ākonga.

The ability to change practice is “adaptive expertise” or tautōhito urutau. Tautōhito urutau (responsive practice) is when kaiako reflect on their current practice to determine if they should do things differently to support ākonga progress.

It’s important to review the impact of any strategy you decide to use, taking into account the evidence of how it is working for ākonga. It’s also important to note that ākonga will need to learn how to use a particular strategy before you consider whether it is an effective way to support their learning.
