    Students investigate networks in this activity. A critical factor in analysing networks is the number of paths leading to or from each obstacle. For example, on Monday’s course …

    Thus obstacles with an odd number of paths are starting and finishing points.

    On Wednesday’s course, the number of paths for each obstacle are:

    If the course were to work, n and r would have to be the start and finish points because they have an odd number of paths. To make the track work, s and w each need to be adjusted to have an odd number of paths, and n and r each need an even number of paths. This can be achieved by closing path n – r and path s – w.
