Back to basics – Years 7–8

Throughout human history, communities and societies have found ways to manage scarcity of resources, most significantly access to food and water. As our climate changes, communities will face new challenges related to basic needs. This resource uses three staple foods (rice, kūmara, and flour) as contexts for exploring ways people have managed, and continue to manage, scarcity.

About this resource

Throughout human history, communities and societies have found ways to manage scarcity of resources, most significantly access to food and water. As our climate changes, communities will face new challenges related to basic needs. This resource uses three staple foods (rice, kūmara, and flour) as contexts for exploring ways people have managed and continue to manage scarcity.

It explores the Know context of Ngā mahinga ohaoha | Economic activity, specifically the connection between scarcity and the trade-offs people choose to manage it. It also touches on the other Know contexts, specifically Te tūrangawaewae me to taiao | Place and environment and Ngā ahurea me te tuakiri kiritōpū | Culture and identity.
