Attitudes and values

Through their learning in health and physical education, ākonga will develop a range of positive and responsible attitudes and values, which include:

  • hauora (wellbeing)
  • the rights of other people
  • people in the community and care for the environment 
  • social justice

Hauora - wellbeing 

Ākonga will learn to:

  • value themselves and other people
  • reflect on their beliefs
  • demonstrate integrity, commitment, resilience, and courage. 

The rights of other people 

Ākonga will learn to:

  • accept and value the natural variation present in people around them 
  • acknowledge diverse viewpoints 
  • demonstrate tolerance, rangimārie (peacefulness), and open-mindedness. 

People in the community and care for the environment 

Ākonga will learn to: 

  • cooperate and āwhina (help) 
  • apply aroha, manaakitanga, care, compassion, and mahi ā ngākau (work of the heart) 
  • take a constructive approach to challenge and competition 
  • engage and participate in a positive manner.

Social justice 

Ākonga will learn about: 

  • fairness 
  • inclusiveness and non-discriminatory practices.
