Maths at our house – Shopping
The purpose of this resource is to provide links to a selection of ways that whānau can support mathematics learning when shopping.
About this resource
A trip to the supermarket is a perfect opportunity to do some maths together, no matter what the age of your children.
There is the opportunity to:
- compare prices and talk about “more than” and “less than”
- to add, subtract, divide, and multiply
- and talk about the shapes and sizes of items as well.
Comparison shopping and budgeting are ways to support the development of financial literacy, and reading labels is a way for children to use their knowledge of percentages and weights within the context of reading charts and tables.
Making good decisions based on understanding maths in a real-life context is what numeracy is about.
