Positive early findings from maths professional learning days

We are excited to share early insights from the first of four maths professional learning days. These sessions are part of a comprehensive professional learning and development (PLD) package designed to support teachers in understanding and implementing the refreshed mathematics and statistics learning area for Years 0-8.

Measuring the impact of PLD

To assess the short-term effectiveness of this professional learning, we are conducting five anonymised surveys—one before participation in the PLD and one following each of the four professional learning days. This approach allows us to track teachers' progress and identify areas where additional support may be needed.

Participation and early feedback

As of 7 March, 337 schools have engaged with this PLD, and we have received 3,036 survey responses from the first professional learning day. The initial feedback has provided valuable insights into teachers’ understanding of key topics and their perceptions of the refreshed curriculum.

The results have been positive:

  • Over 80% of teachers report a deeper understanding of the structure and intention of the refreshed learning area and the importance of teaching to year levels.
  • More than 70% of teachers believe that the refreshed curriculum will lead to improved student outcomes.

Identifying areas for further support

The survey findings have also highlighted areas where teachers would benefit from additional guidance. Many teachers have expressed a need for more information on using assessment to inform teaching. In response, upcoming PLD days will include a stronger focus on assessment and additional guidance on assessment and reporting will be shared with schools soon.

Looking ahead

We greatly appreciate the time and effort teachers have put into providing this feedback. Their insights are invaluable in shaping future PLD sessions to better meet their needs and enhance student learning outcomes.  We will continue to share our survey findings as the maths PLD days continue.

We will be measuring the medium and long-term impact of this PLD through data collected by the Education Review Office and through the Curriculum Insights study.
