Home Economics in the refreshed Y11-13 curriculum
24 October 2025
Home Economics has traditionally been offered at NCEA Levels 2 and 3. But it’s no longer available as a subject at Level 1. While Home Economics is not a standalone curriculum subject, the learning hasn’t disappeared.
As part of a knowledge-rich approach to our curriculum, we want to ensure every student has access to the knowledge and skills they need to succeed. That means that the learning is thoughtfully woven into other subjects, keeping it visible, relevant, and accessible for students.
- Nutrition, wellbeing, and food choice will sit within Health Education for Years 11 to 13.
- Food as a context for product development will be part of Materials and Processing Technology for Years 11-13, highlighting innovation and design.
- Practical skills like cooking, food prep, and hygiene will be integral parts of the Hospitality subject for Years 12 and 13, led by industry and connected to real-world pathways.
By integrating the learning into these subjects, students still be able to access the experiences, knowledge and skills from Home Economics, now with clearer pathways to further study and pathways outside of school.
