Exploring our place – Painting stories

This colourful and engaging big book is for sharing with ākonga in years 1 to 3.

In Painting Stories, two artists who created a community mural in Roxburgh explain how details in the mural relate to the various groups who have connections to the town.

The supporting materials for teachers include activities to help ākonga find out more about the Teviot Valley area and to also make connections with people, events, and changes in their own rohe.

Like any rich resource, Painting Stories can be used as a springboard for multiple areas of investigation. Key social sciences concepts related to the book include whakapapa, identity, belonging, manaakitanga, and tūrangawaewae.
