This page includes information about nation-wide professional learning and development (PLD) to help schools implement the revised maths and statistics learning area for years 0–8.
About this resource
The Ministry is providing nation-wide professional development (PLD) to help schools implement the revised maths curriculum for years 0 – 8
This page will be regularly updated, so please check back for more details in the coming weeks.
Structured maths professional development
Booking for the revised Maths Curriculum professional learning (PLD) has opened for 2025 and 2026 training days.
The PLD will support schools and school leaders with the implementation of the revised maths curriculum for years 0 – 8, with facilitators who can come to schools to hold all-day PLD sessions. Schools can also book hybrid online + facilitator PLD, which will allow flexibility for small schools, and those who can’t commit to a full day of training by allowing staff to review online material at the time that work best for them before coming together online with the facilitator to unpack and discuss the material.
This PLD consists of four separate days of training, which can be undertaken across 2025 and 2026. The PLD is available for years 0-8 staff in state and state-integrated schools. This includes:
school leaders
teachers
teacher aides
Resource Teachers
Relievers
To book the PLD, please go to the maths PLD page Ministry’s PLD website.
(Please note this is different to the PLD being provided by maths resource providers, who are offering PLD on using their resources.)
A minimum of 20 teachers and leaders are required to book a facilitator. Schools are encouraged to book as a cluster or kāhui ako to access the training. Small and rural schools may not be able to assemble 20 teachers and leaders, even if clustering – these schools or clusters can still apply; the Ministry will discuss these applications directly with the schools.
Although schools can access these four days at any time, we anticipate most schools will use the Maths Curriculum Days to take part in Day 1 and 2 and arrange Days 3 and 4 later in the year (or next year). Because of this, schools will be asked to provide three dates in order of preference for each PLD day they would like to book, to allow the Ministry to accommodate all schools’ requests.
We have selected and trained a team of 60 maths facilitators. This will allow us to provide PLD to up to 30 kāhui ako or clusters each day. To make sure these facilitators are used effectively and all schools can access the first days of PLD in early 2025, your school may want to consider holding its sessions mid-week rather than on a Monday or Friday (where it is anticipated there will be high demand), or consider whether working with a maths facilitator would be a good use of call back days.
We will do our best to make facilitators available for your first choice of days for this PLD, though this will not always be possible. We will call schools to discuss if changes need to be made to applications. Schools can make more than one application at a time (e.g. a kāhui ako of 200 teachers might want to book 10 days of PLD, as they might only be able to release 20 teachers at a time).
*Please note: From next year, applications for the following term will close at the end of Week 5 in the pervious term.
Schools will use Salesforce to apply for the PLD, using an ESL log-in. Details on setting up a log-in can be found on the Ministry’s PLD website.
The delivery of the PLD will begin in Term 1 2025. Please note that as regionally allocated PLD (RAPLD) is no longer available, this will be the central maths PLD for teachers of Years 0-8 for the coming two years.
The aim of the maths PLD is to provide teachers and school leaders with:
a good understanding of the teaching sequence to be taught across phases 1-3 (years 0-8).
a good, working understanding of the three elements in the Mathematics and Statistics Learning Area: Understand, Know, and Do.
a good understanding of the Science of Learning in relation to mathematics and statistics and are using it to inform their teaching.
a good understanding of the teaching guidance in the mathematics and statistics learning area.
the ability to plan for maths successfully, incorporating a quality hour a day of maths. This includes annual, unit, weekly and individual lesson planning.
increased knowledge of quality formative assessment practices that inform daily teaching.
It is intended that teachers access these days in sequence as the learning in each session builds on learning in the previous one.
Please note, travel costs and teacher release time are not funded for this PLD.
