Te Aho Arataki Marau mō te Ako i Te Reo Māori, the curriculum guidelines for teaching and learning Te Reo Māori, is intended to help every English-medium school in New Zealand to design and shape a curriculum that includes te reo Māori, alongside other learning areas, and acknowledges its value. Te reo Māori, as the indigenous language of Aotearoa New Zealand, was declared an official language in 1987 and, as a taonga, is guaranteed protection under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
By learning te reo and becoming increasingly familiar with tikanga, Māori students strengthen their connection to their identities, while non-Maōri build an appreciation of cultural knowledge, language, and understandings that are important to Māori.
